It’s generally a given that the more you know, the better off you’ll be — in India, that is no exception. Below is a list of books that a variety of volunteers have found helpful in understanding the history and culture of India. Please view this list as an introductory offering to the wealth of material that can be found on India. All volunteers are encouraged to spend time on their own researching and reading as much as they can before they actually arrive in India.  Though it’s important to remember, half the beauty in volunteering in India is the amazing experience it provides.  So see the reading as a way to ready yourself, but keep in mind the possibility of surprises around every corner.

Note: Because no book is exhaustive, it is strongly encouraged visitors speak to those who have first hand experience in India. Talking to friends or family that have experienced India first hand will provide you with invaluable insights into living, working, and traveling in India.  Plus, verbalizing why one is going to India often clarifies in their mind what their purpose is and what they hope to get out of the experience.
